Astriferous - Atavistic Unraveling - Music & Performance - Vinyl

Continuing the primordial descent that kicked off in earnest with their 2023 debut album, Pulsations From the Black Orb, Astriferous return with their second full-length, Atavistic Unraveling. Much like that celebrated debut, the Costa Ricans' sophomore album is perfectly titled: truly, the sensations one finds spread across this dread landscape are an Atavistic Unraveling. Thankfully, Astriferous' foundation has changed little - the swarming morbidity of early '90s Finnish death metal fused with classic South American madness - but there are (dread) developments that prove the band are just now hitting their stride. Despite it's title, Atavistic Unraveling shows Astriferous at their tightest and sharpest, with chops and execution meeting at a nexus of impossibly horrific proportions. Duly armed, the quartet take their songwriting to strange, skronking lengths, rendering their angularity both an unsettling and utterly attacking thing. Likewise, the slight cleaning-up of production has paid dividends, allowing these malformed ruminations to fully seep into the listener's psyche - mangling the mind, wracking the body - whilst emerging with just enough linear propulsion to land the record on the right side of art rather than riff salad. Collectively, these changes have made Astriferous even more world-eating than before, further cementing their homeland's death metal scene as one of the most potent around. Atavistic Unraveling awaits those who dare.
